Developmental genetics: Vertebrates and insects see eye to eye
نویسنده
چکیده
The results of a number of recent studies indicate that eye development in insects and vertebrates may have more features in common than hitherto suspected. The results support the possibility that insect and vertebrate eyes evolved from a complex ancestral organ.

Vertebrate eye development as modeled in Drosophila.
Pax6, a member of the paired-box family of transcription factors, is critical for oculogenesis in both vertebrates and insects. Identification of potential vertebrate Pax6 targets has been guided by studies in Drosophila, where the Pax6 homologs eyeless ( ey ) and twin of eyeless ( toy ) function within a network of genes that synergistically pattern the developing fly eye. These targets, which...

In this review we highlight two genetic pathways important for eye morphogenesis that are partially conserved between flies and vertebrates. Initially we focus on the ey paradigm and establish which aspects of this genetic hierarchy are conserved in vertebrates. We discuss experiments that evaluate the non-linear relationship amongst the genes of the hierarchy with a concentration on vertebrate...

Objective(s): Childhood cataract is a genetically heterogeneous eye disorder that results in visual impairment. The aim of this study was to identify the genetic mutations of connexin 50 gene among Iranian families suffered from autosomal dominant congenital cataracts (ADCC). Materials and Methods: Families, having at least two members with bilateral familial congenital cataract, were selected ...
متن کاملEvolution of insect eye development: first insights from fruit fly, grasshopper and flour beetle.
The molecular genetic dissection of Drosophila eye development led to the exciting discovery of a surprisingly large panel of genes and gene activities, which are functionally conserved across phyla. Little effort has yet been made towards pinpointing non-conserved gene functions in the developing Drosophila eye. This neglects the fact that Drosophila visual system development is a highly deriv...
متن کاملThe basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper transcription factor Mitf is conserved in Drosophila and functions in eye development.
The MITF protein is a member of the MYC family of basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper (bHLH-Zip) transcription factors and is most closely related to the TFE3, TFEC, and TFEB proteins. In the mouse, MITF is required for the development of several different cell types, including the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells of the eye. In Mitf mutant mice, the presumptive RPE cells hyperprolifera...
